After an intense and emotional finale, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season three comes to an end after 10 weeks of episodes. Fans across the globe have debated Ru’s decision to crown Krystal Versace as the winner over the past 24 hours.

The 20 year old has made Drag Race history by becoming the youngest winner the show has ever had. Runners up, Ella Vaday and Kitty Scott Claus, took to Twitter to express their support for their competitors’ victory.

Since RuPaul’s Drag Race has reached global astronomical success over the past decade, many local drag performers have had mixed views on the tv show. The question of whether it has had a positive or negative impact on regional drag scenes and the audience’s expectations of their performances has been raised once again.

With a ‘fashion queen’ winning this season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK, it becomes more and more unknown as to where the future of drag is headed.

Local Leeds drag inspired performer, Phlegm Fatale (@phlegm_fatalel_), has been incorporating drag into her performance art for many years now. At only 18, she has been exploring the art of drag since she was 15 and has worked with photographers and other artists up and down the country.

When discussing the positive effect that RuPaul’s drag race has had on society she said ‘Drag race has had an overwhelmingly positive effect in the sense that it’s formatted for mainstream audiences and has enabled the art form to be so accessible and destigmatise’. This is the general shared consensus of drag performers across the globe.

However, she feels ‘many of the contestants are contributing as much negativity and toxicity as they are humanity and compassion’ and that RuPaul instigates a lot of the intensity and discomfort of the cast.
