New Covid-19 variant 'Omicron' has threatened traders for a second consecutive year, with concern that more restrictions could affect Christmas trading.

With Christmas approaching, the threat to those in the hospitality industry in Leeds has increased as restrictions tighten in the region.

After last years winter lockdown, many businesses suffered financially and were forced to close after continuous problems throughout the pandemic.

Another lockdown during their peak period, would cause many businesses, especially independent, to close.

The Government imposed restrictions quickly following the increased worry from the World Health Organisation, with the dangers of the Omicron variant not yet known.

Mandatory masks were re introduced as well as PCR tests to enter the country, with possible 10 day self-isolation upon return.

People have been encouraged to take a booster jab, with Prime Minister Boris Johnson insisting these steps are, “proportionate and responsible.”

Health secretary Sajid Javid told the BBC that the UK is nowhere near the lockdown stage yet, but hospitality business owners are not feeling confident or hopeful.

Lee Griffin, owner of Miles & Co in Leeds Market said, “There’s always a certain amount of worry and of course the unknown.”

Griffin went on to say ”you’d hope after the last couple of years we’d be in a better place.”

This potential lockdown is also causing some work Christmas parties to either be cancelled, put on hold, or continue until the government say otherwise.

When asked about their Christmas party, hairdresser Jade Elliot said, “It is something we all need after the year we’ve had.”

With everyone being in lockdown last year, it’s been two years since people were able to celebrate with their work colleagues.

There have been reports that a Christmas party happened last year in Downing Street during the nationwide lockdown, but the Number 10 insists no rules were broken.

An announcement is expected in the next week as to whether more restrictions will be imposed over Christmas.
