Oman international Siddhant Gavankar has signed for Leeds Beckett Cricket Club for the 2023 season

Leeds Beckett University Cricket Club have signed U19 capped Oman International ahead of their 2023 BUCS campaign.

Siddhant Gavankar, 19, received his first international cap for Oman U19 at the age of just 17.

He said representing his country was “momentous” and “very special to me.”

Gavankar believes he can bring great experience into the Leeds Beckett side. “Having played for Oman U19, I feel I bring valuable experience, and I hopefully can add that cutting edge to allow the team to get over the line in tight games,” he said.

“Playing for Leeds Beckett is important for me because one of the main reasons I came to the UK was to play cricket in these sorts of environments, so I’m very happy to have been selected in the team, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Gavankar started playing cricket from a young age back in Oman, then moved over to the UK when he was just 15, to begin his studies at Sedbergh High School, and to develop his cricketing career.

“I moved to the UK to progress in my cricket career, and I thought Sedbergh High School was the ideal place to begin.”

“The pitches in Oman are a lot faster and harder than the ones in the UK, so adapting at first was hard, but I feel like I’m getting used to it now.” Said the All-rounder.

Many other professional athletes studied, and played cricket at Sedbergh High School, such as multi-format England Cricketer Harry Brook, and Yorkshire CCC players Harry Duke, and Matt Revis, and Gavankar will be hoping to follow in their footsteps.

The three times BUCS Champions winter training has already started, as they look to defend their title for the third year in a row.
