Jamaica are days away from their World cup debut but what sort of impact will this have on Rugby League in Jamaica?

Jamaica have qualified for the Rugby League World Cup for the first time ever.

They kick off their campaign with a tough test against Ireland on 16 October at Headingley Stadium.

Captain Ashton Golding said the sport is growing in Jamaica.

“It’s about building a generation of Rugby League players in Jamaica,” he said.

“It could spark something like a North American league.”

‘No limits’

Golding hopes the World Cup will inspire children.

He said: “You gain fundamental life skills. We want to widen the range of sports available to young kids and get them interested in Rugby.

“I believe there’s no limits.”

The North American Rugby League’s inaugural season is in 2022, making Rugby League in America a very small but high potential market.

Jamaica also has a league, the National Club Championship.

Founded in 2005, the league originally had four teams which has now grown to 20 teams.

“Rugby league in itself is a really small sport.

“There’s a big lack of government funding and its all run by volunteers.

“It just goes to show what could be achieved if the sport grows and becomes popular which is why this is so important.

“With it being in England we’ll be able to use the big media presence to our advantage hopefully.”

‘Problems with crime’

Vice captain Marvin Thompson also spoke about how the values of Rugby League will help young people in Jamaica, “We have a real problem with crime in Jamaica.

“It’s important that young people focus their energy on positive things. Discipline, hard-work and teamwork are all very important skills to have.”

“It teaches kids respect which is massive.

“It teaches you to be a better person and you make friends for life.”

The Jamaican side will be hoping that they can create a legacy this Autumn and become Rugby League pioneers for their country.
