Going to university is an opportunity to build new relationships with people who you hopefully can go on to live with throughout your time there. Unfortunately, not everyone can be so lucky.

Most friendships are built from sharing accommodation in first year or finding friends on your course. However, if students have struggled to connect with people through these avenues, it is more difficult to then find a group to live with for the duration of their course, meaning more students having to live alone.

The 2022 Student Academic Survey reported that 1 in 4 students in the UK feel lonely at university on a weekly basis. The results from the survey showed that university has been a lonely place for students in the last year with 23% of students saying they felt lonely ‘most’ or ‘all of the time’.

The Leeds Beckett student Union is hosting the Widen Your Circle event today with Unipol Student Homes to combat this issue and give students the opportunity to meet people in a similar situation and find housemates for next year.

Marketing communications manager of the Student Union, Justine Belanger, says that it is an “opportunity to meet new people without any pressure”.

“The purpose of the event is to help students meet people outside their friendship circle. When you meet people at university on your course you might not get on with the people you thought you would.”

The event is free to everyone and will be held at The Hive, Portland Building from 4.00pm to 6.00pm.
