Defeat for Beckett in Varsity futsal game

A 3-4 defeat in Varsity to the University of Leeds means Beckett have lost 12 straight games season.

After controlling large parts of the game, Beckett were unfortunate to lose out to a late winner from the University of Leeds after fighting back from 0-3 down.

Beckett conceded 3 early goals, but managed to pull two back before half-time through Owen Stanley and Tom Painter.

After Jake Field scored a dramatic equaliser, it was Beckett who were firmly in the ascendancy in the second half, but against the run of the play, the University of Leeds grabbed a late winner.

Varsity was a chance for Beckett to put their poor form behind them and end the season on a high against their rivals.

However, it wasn’t meant to be, as the University of Leeds survived a scare after surrendering an early lead to claim the bragging rights as their second team also defeated Beckett earlier that day.

Beckett player David Lawn gave his reaction to the game.

“It was disappointing to not come away with a win, especially after we came back to equalise.

“I feel like the result was not a true reflection of the overall game.

“The fact we came back from 3-0 shows a mentality that we will not give in if things go against us and the way we controlled the game was another thing I particularly found we did well,

“I think that should be the blueprint for the upcoming season in terms of how we play with the ball.”

Circumstances for the team have been far from ideal for them this season. For large parts of the season they have been without a head coach and Carlos Nunes explains how this has affected them.

“Not having a coach at particular moments in the season was very difficult and affected us.

“At times, we were going into matches without a coach and were relying on the more experienced players to help us out.

“Not having a coach played a part in us losing a lot of the games” he said.

Lawn is hopeful the team can get revenge when they play their rivals next year.

“Winning Varsity is a part in the season where we as players all look forward towards, because the rivalry and commitment on show from both teams shows the importance of fixture.

“It is a match we will do our best to win next season” he said.
