At the helm for this game was head coach Alfie Coleman, a recent player turned coach after a long lasting head injury sustained last year. The injury has almost put Alfie out of the game for life, but a newfound love of coaching within the university has inspired him on to a new path at Leeds Beckett.
Having completed pre-season alongside the team over the summer, Coleman had high hopes heading into the opening few fixtures of the league. A win that will cement itself in the history books for the rugby union club kicked off his teams campaign, a 90-0 victory over local rivals York St Johns secured the team a top spot and 5 points in Colemans opening game in charge. The results came crashing down on them yesterday however a disappointing 8-5 result away at a hostile Coach Lane Park has put their league hopes into perspective.
“You have no idea how the days going to go, its so different as a coach, there are so many unknown variables.” Said Coleman on what has been a roller coaster week. Commenting on his teams recent victory down at West Park rugby club, a famous base of operations for many Beckett squads including the Men’s BUCS super rugby squad who favour the training ground on most Monday nights, he said, “I’d rather win by 1 point and learn from it than win by a lot.”
“In hindsight looking back on yesterdays performance the worst thing that could have happened was winning 90-0 last week”. The team go head to head with Hull University next as they try and turn things around to secure top spot.
