'UK coffee week' set to provide clean water in Ethiopia with help from Leeds coffee shops

A rise in sales has been spotted in some coffee shop chains across Leeds during UK Coffee Week.

UK Coffee Week is a nationwide fundraising campaign supporting Project Waterfall. Thousands of coffee shops across the country, including large chains like Nespresso, take part every year. It is a campaign that provides clean drinking water, sanitation and education to coffee growing communities.

Since 2011, the UK Coffee Week community has raised over £1 million for Project Waterfall.

Some coffee shops across Leeds were unaware of UK Coffee Week, or chose not to take part. This is because coffee shops do not gain any profit from being part of the project, it is simply to provide help for areas in the world with unprotected water sources.

Funds raised this week will directly fund Berbere in Ethiopia, as it is considered the biological and cultural home of coffee. Project Waterfall will build a solar multi-village gravity-flow water system which will provide water for another 40,000 people.

This new infrastructure will be climate resistant and accessible for everyone living in the area.
