Killer Storm Babet

Flooding in Castle Donnington
Floodig Castle Donnington
Nine people have sadly died due to the severe conditions Storm Babet brought to the UK this week.

110 Flood warnings are still being shown as well as flood alerts occurring in other areas.

Due to winter approaching, there are worries that these numbers could rise as Scott Ravenhill, from Castle Donnington, emphasises, “this is the fourth time I can recall having a flood and each time seems to be getting worse.

“This is definitely the worst flood that we’ve had.” With him expressing that now both brooks near him have burst their banks

Over the weekend, there were attempts to prevent the water reaching individual houses. Scott Ravenhill: “the only thing I’ve been able to do is get long planks of wood to divert the water away from the property.”

He then revealed that the council in his area, “have been very helpful, bringing sandbags to put in the doorways to soak up the water.”

For Scott, this strategy failed as water began to enter his garage on Saturday afternoon.

The flood continued to cause chaos around the UK keeping people housebound and unable to get to work.

Darcey Ravenhill is a waitress at the Radison Hotel and couldn’t access the roads surrounding her house due to the severe flooding that the weather had caused. This left her with no choice but to ring the hotel unable to attend her shift.

Senior Lecturer of Geography, Stephen Carver speaks about long-term ways to prevent the flooding as he says, “pouring more concrete, creating steel flood defenses is not going to cut it.

“We need to look towards creating resilience upstream.”

The Environment Agency say some river levels are continuing to rise with the water at the beginning of the week filling streets and households all over the UK.
