Leeds Beckett student makes history by playing for the Jamaican Sunshine Girls netball team.

Rhea Dixon is "pleased and proud" as she is the first non-Jamaican-born athlete to play for the Jamaican Sunshine Girls.

Dixon played for England in her younger years, but joining the Jamaican team is something she has “always considered”.

Dixon said: “they enforced how my style of play would really suit the Sunshine girls,” While making known their plans for Dixon on the team, “they are starting to enter a new four-year cycle for the Commonwealth Games and World Cup and they really want me in the fold,” said Dixon.

Dixon has been brought into the Sunshine Girls squad, as they prepare for the Fast5 competition which will be held in New Zealand starting November 11th.

This opportunity not only creates a new high in Dixon’s career, but it means a lot to herself and her family.

“It’s huge in terms of making history as the first non-Jamaican-born athlete to play for the Sunshine Girls, it’s just an awesome opportunity for me to connect with my heritage and family out here,” she said.

Dixon is not shy about how big this opportunity is and what it means for her career. The 26-year-old said: “It’s an opportunity to play in a different style, get on the international stage and test myself against the best athletes in the world”.

Dixon now has the title of an international athlete however she also holds the title of a Leeds Beckett University student. Dixon was full of praise for Leeds Beckett as she said her course leader told her to “just go for it”.

Along with the support of her academic team, she has mentioned her Beckett Coach Francine Hall. Dixon said: “Francine has been doing extra sessions with me, I can’t thank her enough for that either, to get me prepared to come over here”.

With a huge amount of support and a growing career, Rhea Dixon is an athlete to watch.
