Halifax FC Women have been drawn at home to Huddersfield Town in the FAWNL (Football Association Women’s National League) Cup quarter-finals.
Halifax manager Rob Mitchell said: “To get a home tie is a bonus … It’ll be a fantastic occasion, one we are all looking forward to … our main goal will be to try and get into the semi-finals.”
The last round of the competition against Leeds United was a close fought battle with the game finishing 4-3 thanks to a brace from debutant Meg Boydell.
Halifax conceded 3 late goals in the match as they were reduced to 9 players because of a second yellow card for Isobel Dean and a sin bin for Lauren Wilcock. It became nervy towards the end but Halifax stayed strong and ensured their progression into the next round.
The Eagles defeated Huddersfield 1-0 earlier in the season, with a late stunner from attacker Darcie Greene coming after Halifax keeper Becky Flaherty denied them from the penalty spot.
When speaking on the quarter-final he said: “They (Huddersfield) are gonna come into it thinking, we are gonna owe you one … I thought they were good against us … they are gonna want to avenge what happened in the league.”
Huddersfield have only picked up 3 points from 9 games in the FA Women’s National League. Compare this to Halifax, who have picked up 8 points in 6 games, they look the weaker of the two sides.
But with both teams strengthening since they last met, they won’t be facing the same lineups as they did before. The game against Huddersfield is set to be played on the 28th January 2024. The team reaching the semi-final will face one of Newcastle United, AFC Fylde, Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Hashtag United or London Bees.
