Central midfielder Rob Rankin speaks about the 10-goal thriller at Bodington Football Hub where University of Leeds thirds beat University of Salford first team.

Four goals and a missed penalty in the first half. Six goals, a missed penalty and a red card in the second half. There wasn’t much time to rest in this all action fixture.

Omar Fakih ballooned a penalty over the bar for the home side but it was his brilliance that created Leeds’ second goal which meant that the two sides when into the half-time break at 2-2. Salford came out of the interval on fire, scoring two quick goals that put them firmly into the driver’s seat whilst completely silencing the Leeds eleven.

With 20 minutes left, Joe Parker pulled one back to give Leeds a chance and just a few moments later Salford were down to 10-men with the referee pointing for another penalty. Different taker but same result as captain George Riches had his penalty saved but the ball fell to the feet of Leeds’ Sam Horner who rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

Going into the final stages of the game it was Sam Horner with a moment of brilliance who struck the ball from 25 yards, leaving the goalkeeper rooted, finding the top left corner. Scenes erupted as members of the Leeds’ bench stormed 60 yards across the pitch to join the celebrations.

Seconds before the final whistle, Louis Spraggon rolled the ball around the Salford goalkeeper and poked it into the net, despite Salford’s protests that the goal scorer received the ball in an offside position.

A comeback victory in the cup for University of Leeds as they beat University of Salford 6-4. Sam Horner’s second half heroics meant that the Yorkshire side clawed victory from the jaws of defeat.
