Will Anti-social behaviour cancel bonfire night?

Fireworks
Events for bonfire night have been cancelled by the council due to the rise in antisocial behaviour around Leeds. This issue is being overseen by councillors, the fire brigade and police to undergo this problem.

Councillor Barry Anderson: “We’ve come up with a strategy, we’ve communicated with the known worst offenders to warn them they are likely to get prosecuted if they go about causing damage and causing mayhem”.

Fire Station Manger, David Lucas shares what should be put in place for bonfire night to go back to the night it used to be.

“Raising public awareness, public safety, getting the public to organise public displays where there are safety measures implemented and raise the age of being able to purchase fireworks.”

This time of the year is the busiest time for the fire services as he continues to say, “we do get quite a lot of antisocial behaviour and its a challenging time because of the sheer volume of calls we experience and not only for us our partners as well.”

Garforth and District Lions Club is one of many that has had to call off their annual event for the first time in 40 years due to the behaviour problems that took place during tis time last year.

Martin Eggington, President of the pub expresses that is is, “so sad” that this has had to be the outcome.

The activities chairman of the pub, Dave Hill expresses that the actions that took place, “wasn’t pretty” with fireworks being thrown across the road at each other.

The annual fun will hopefully come back into place next year with safety measures put into place so Leeds can see their sky’s filled with colours and their pubs filled with people.
