Return of the Christmas Market

After three years of absence, the Christmas market has finally returned back to Leeds to kick up the festive season until the 22nd December.

Due to being cancelled because of COVID-19 in previous years, the family friendly market are expecting two million visitors.

Workers are spreading the festive fun across the city with 120 stalls selling food and drinks as well as rides and entertainment being put in place.

The Mayor of Leeds, councilor Al Garthwaite said: “This is the first year that we’ve really been able to come back in force.”

The popular ice rink will also be returning to Millennium Square for families to enjoy with access for wheelchair users.

Ice rink manager, Bethany Butler said: “It feels like a brand new event this year, there’s lots more going on across the city, lots more markets. I think the novelty will bring people in and people will want to see what’s new.”

After not working at the Christmas market since 2019, stall holders are happy to be back working the Christmas market and are looking forward to seeing the money and diversity that the stalls will bring for the community.

Curtis Eddy, the company director of young catering says: “it’s seasonal, its only on at this time of year, it does bring a lot of people into town.”

Leeds City Council and Market Place Europe have made an agreement to create a Christmas Market across Leeds every year up until 2025.

These markets will be located: Lands Lane, Top of Lands Lane, The Headrow, Dortmund Square, Albion Place, New Briggate, Corn Exchange, Top of Briggate, Bottom of Briggate Bond Street, City Square.
