Chorley stay third in the National League North after win at Moors

Chorley traveled to the northeast on Boxing Day to face Spennymoor at the Brewery Field. The away side won 2-0 with an early goal from Mike Calveley setting the tone for the game as Chorley dominated the proceedings. The away side cemented their victory when Carlton Ubaezunonu grabbed a second for the visitors..

The result was no surprise with Spennymoor coming into the game without a win in four league games whilst the visitors had won three of their last four games.

Chorley started fast from the opening whistle when Justin Johnson’s cut in from the left wing and drilled an effort goal wards but Ben Pollock cleared the magpie’s effort off the line.

Moments later Moors had a chance of their own as a deep cross found Kennan Fergusson at the back post who took a touch and attempted to chip the Chorley keeper but his strike came off the crossbar.

It was the away side that took the lead in the 16th minute after Spennymoor failed to clear a long ball into the box and Calvely took a touch and rifled into the roof of the net, giving the away side a deserved lead.

Moors responded well and earned a penalty Reece Staunton was brought down inside the area. Serial goal scorer Glen Taylor stepped up to take it but was denied by an outstretched arm from Matt Urwin in the Magpies net.

Moments later Rob Ramshaw was denied this time by Urwin after the onrushing keeper saved a close-range effort in fantastic style.

Half time: Spennymoor Town 0-1 Chorley

After the break, Chorley regained control of the game and before the hour mark, the Magpies doubled their lead. The goal came after Lebrun Mbeka slipped at the back and Ubaezunonu pounced on the loose ball before dribbling past the Moors keeper and placing his effort into an empty net for his sixth of the season.

Chorley almost added a third before the full time whistle when Jak Hazlehurst weaved his way past the defenders in the Spennymoor box before chipping the keeper but Michael Ledger cleared off the line once again for the home side.

This rounded off an afternoon of action in the National League North and sets up an exciting game on 30th December where the two sides face each other again but this time at Victory Park.
