October is breast cancer awareness month, and each year about 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK, according to https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-awareness/breast-cancer-awareness-month. While 1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer, it can affect men too and around 390 men are diagnosed annually.

With many places across the country coming together to show support for breast cancer awareness month such as charity runs and wear it pink day. What has Leeds done to show solidarity?
In Leeds, awareness is being championed by the Leeds uni Boob team which is a student led group working in direct partnership with CoppaFeel “to make chest checking a regular, lifesaving habit for everyone”. CoppaFeel is a breast cancer awareness charity focused on promoting early detection of breast cancer by encouraging woman under 30 to regularly check their breasts.

“At Leeds, we use every creative tool we can to bring breast cancer awareness to life and also focus on breaking down the awkwardness that can surround breast health conversations.” – Savant Purkayastha, president of the Boob team. The group also run engaging, inclusive events like workshops, awareness stalls, mocktail nights, and “boob art” sessions all deigned to make learning about chest health approachable and event fun.
Brands like lounge are also supporting the cause with boob boxes and city visits to raise funds and awareness with Leeds on the tour.
