Sober October: ‘Inspiring Change’ at Forward Leeds

Sober October has been around since 2014, to encourage people to make healthier choices surrounding alcohol, while raising money for the Macmillan Cancer support group.

Some people participate in the month of sobriety to “prioritize [themselves] over alcohol” according to Rob Mancini.

Forward Leeds has been providing alcohol and drugs services to young people and adults in Leeds for ten years. Amy Conway, a recovery coordinator on the focused intervention team believes that the charity “helps people achieve their personal goals” surrounding substance abuse.

Mark Hindwell, communications officer for Forward Leeds describes the range in people who seek support: “a little old lady who is worried she’s having too many glasses of sherry, right the way to someone who is living on the streets of Leeds having used heroin for 30 years.”

He does this through “leaflets, posters, social media and press releases.” He then went on to talk about the different events that run in Leeds to push the different support they have available, for example stalls at freshers’ fairs and campaigns such as ‘How to Party Properly’.
