The Green Party now has over 100,000 members, the most ever for the party.

Since Zack Polanski’s election as the new leader of the Green Party last month, membership of the party has risen by over 45%. The Green Party have announced they now have over 125,000 members.

Tim Goodall, councillor for Leeds’ Headingley and Hyde Park ward, has said that this is all down to the party’s new leader, describing him as “charismatic”, he said, “we all already knew he comes across very well but then its all about what he’s been saying since on social media and on the news, really talking about hope and equality.”

Since Polanski’s election as party leader, he has been vocal about his politics on his social media platforms as well as podcasts, conferences and BBC’s Question Time, making a name for himself in the political world.

Goodall explained his thoughts on why the party is doing so well: “We’ve got a Jewish, gay leader, we’ve got a Muslim deputy leader and we’ve got a female deputy leader, from both the north and the south of the country so I think they’re appealing to and representing a lot of the country.”

Leeds has six Green party councillors across the city, with the joint deputy leader of the Green Party, Mothin Ali, being from Sheffield and living in Leeds. Goodall’s ward, Headingley and Hyde Park, is getting “the highest number of new members in the whole of Leeds” he told Leeds Now, “Leeds is growing even faster than the national party.”

When asked what local issues are driving people towards joining the Green Party, Goodall says there is a “general frustration” in Leeds and “people are fed up with the lack of investment in the city.”
