Rising inflation causes pressure for Leeds locals

Rising inflation is putting pressure on households and independent businesses, with UK inflation increasing to 3.5% in the 12 months to September 2026

According to the Office for National Statistics, transport made the largest upward contribution to the monthly change in inflation.

Kieran, owner of “Hyde Cafe and Bar,” an independent cafe in Hyde Park opened the doors to his business a year ago. He said that the cost of living crisis has made the process of starting his own business even more difficult.

He criticised the challenges facing new business owners. “The council say they need independent businesses but do not make it accessible to start them.” Adding that the profits are relatively small compared to the costs involved in running a cafe.

Local mum Amanda says rising costs are also affecting everyday life. She said affording necessities, such as fuel for her car and childcare, has become increasingly difficult.

Amanda denounced the governments response to the crisis, arguing that more needs to be done to tackle financial inequality. “I don’t think they’re doing a good job at all.” She questioned how billionaires can accumulate mass wealth while others struggle to afford basic necessities.

With inflation rising nationally, the experiences of Leeds residents and business owners highlight the continuing financial pressures facing local communities.
