A Leeds environmentalist group has expressed it’s opposition to the Government’s plans that would allow Yorkshire’s coal tips to be re-mined.

Coal tips act as storage for the byproducts of coal production, and many still contain smaller pieces of coal that can be extracted.

Tony Herrmann from Carbon Conversations in Leeds said, “We shouldn’t be burning coal at all and therefore not using any new licence mining or any existing sources of coal that’s, you know, lying around, whether it’s on people’s doorsteps or not.”

Ann Davies spoke in a Westminster Hall debate, saying “We must prevent a new industry of commercial coal tip mining from taking root and perpetuating fossil fuel pollution. I urge the Government to extend their coal licence ban to cover the re-mining of coal tips.”
