Issued warning over food shortages in the UK: An outcry from farmers

There are growing calls for the UK to become more self-sufficient and aware of what’s happening.

According to the World Food Program USA – WFPUSA, food shortage happens when an area, region or country does not have enough food – or enough nutritious food – for its population.

Food shortages typically happen because of production issues where insufficient food is grown or imported to meet a population’s energy and nutrient requirements.

In the latter part of 2023 into 2024, farmers began to issue warnings over food shortages after heavy rain in the UK.

The downpours have left agricultural land saturated and often still underwater, with arable farmers unable to plant spring crops and losing those from the winter.

As voiced out by the NFU vice president, a crisis is building in the farming sector in the UK due to bad weather conditions adding to soaring costs of inputs such as fertiliser and warned consumers could see the effects because produce doesn’t leave the farm gate.

Popular Carbohydrate concerns

A shortage of popular carbohydrates such as wheat, bread, pasta, and cereal is most likely to trigger civil unrest, however, David Eudall, economics and analysis director for the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, stated in an interview that, not only the cereal farmers that are being impacted.

Famers began suffering during torrential downpours in October 2023 – including from storms like Henk in January – and the impact of this “extreme weather” cannot be overestimated.

Before this event happened, news was circulated about a possible global food shortage due to “climate change.”

The need to be abreast of the current news is paramount.
