Life in the UK

Moving into a new city

a woman walking across a cross walk in a cityBrandon Atchison

“They said it is going to be smooth and easy” so she thought until she arrived into the city and the cold winter wind welcomed her firstly by removing the expensive wig she brought from Lagos in Nigeria and blew it through the floors of Heathrow. The floors are neat enough, why should my wig sweep their city she thought after successfully recovering her wig and putting it back on her head with a sigh of relief. You needed not to ask if she was from Nigeria as her dress and accent sold her away even before she got out of the airport as she eventually got into the taxi that would convey her to her destination looking through the widow at people going back and forth she said to herself “WELCOME TO THE UK”

Its been 6 months yet she finds it difficult to adjust to life in the UK, the coldness not just in the weather but in peoples faces and attitude made her miss the warmth and heat she never thought she would miss leaving her country, want to know about the numerous times she has missed her bus and hopped on the wrong one cause she didn’t know how to use the google map, lateness to meetings cause the “African time” mentality chose not to leave her or the struggle to speak the British accent that ends up betraying her when she tries to speak. Life in the UK has taught her a lot and she is still learning, taking a step each day as she tries to find her pace.

Many people find it difficult adjusting to new environments and sometimes it gets really tough for them unable to process the changes and differences from their homeland whch is why its important to firstly let your mind adjust then your body adjust to it as well.
