A day to remember for Halifax FC Women as they make their debut at The Shay

It was a big stepping stone for women's sport in Halifax, seeing their team playing at such a famous stadium.

Since the club’s establishment in 2013, Halifax FC Women have faced many ups and downs. But, just over a month ago, the club experienced one of its biggest ups to date, playing their first ever game at The Shay, the home of Halifax Town.

The team’s manager, Rob Mitchell said, “Leading the team out was a moment I’ll never forget, it filled me with an immense sense of pride to lead this team onto such a special pitch and be part of a historic moment for the club.”.

When speaking to Brad Mitchell, the owner of Halifax FC Women, he said: “To play at The Shay, with it being such a famous stadium, was massive for the club, the players and the supporters.”.

Halifax ended up winning the game on their big day, just pipping Blackburn by one goal to nil, in front of a strong home support.

“The supporters backed us in numbers,” said the owner, “It was a record crowd and that was absolutely huge for the club.”.

It was the first game that the club had ever played in Halifax, as external factors had meant that the team had to play all of their games elsewhere, so being able to play in their proper home was exactly what the club needed.

As for the future, Brad Mitchell is spearheading a purchase attempt of The Shay, as he wants to take over the running of the stadium, so it can be utilised for many sporting clubs around Halifax. “We want to make it a community centre, that is also a home for Halifax Women,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell also noted he had the support of Kate Dearden, who fully supports the idea of the team playing at The Shay week in week out, highlighting the strong plans that Halifax FC Women has for the future of both their club, as well as The Shay.

Rob Mitchell added: “I hope it isn’t the last time we get that opportunity. Hopefully, one day, we’ll walk out at The Shay again and create even more memories.”

It was a special day for the club, even better that it finished off with a win, and they will be hoping that same feeling will be replicated many times over in the future.

Halifax now find themselves second in the league after seven games played, with their eyes firmly on the top spot of the Women’s National League Division One North.
