Homeless people in Leeds forced to give up furry companions for a place to sleep.

Homeless people are suffering in winter nights being refused entry to hostels as they are accompanied with dogs.

In the city of Leeds homeless people are becoming more and more desperate for a place to stay especially as the winter nights have begun. The concern is people who own dogs have the dread of parting ways with their beloved pets as homeless shelters don’t allow animals

Government statistics state that 1 in every 10 homeless person has a dog but the amount of hostels that allow dogs is very small. This is where the problem is stemming from. Dogs are being left in cages and are not being looked after in the right environment at the hostels.

Homeless man Harry Palmer was interviewed as he has a dog Alfie with him on the streets. He has been homeless for around 2 years and has had his dog with him for a year and a half. “There is no way I would ever leave my dog for a place to stay even in winter nights. we have been through so much. he is my companion and best friend.”

He also said “the dogs don’t even go to good homes and nice places they get stuck in some horrible dog shelter because a lot of kennels don’t accept dogs from the homeless and that usually ends up in them getting put down”

“If I didn’t have my dog it would cause me a huge amount of anxiety because he’s my life partner and he’s been through so much with me it wouldn’t feel right.”

This is putting a huge strain on homeless people as they could be in a safe hostel but having to leave their dogs just isn’t worth it.

Especially as the colder nights have approached more dogs are being left in the streets the RSPCA stated that over 40,000 dogs are left homeless around this time of the year. A lot of them don’t ever get rehomed.
