The renovations will modernise the tower, improve accessibility and maximise viewing capacity.

The CN Tower sits at 553 metres in Toronto, Canada’s largest city. For many years, it was the world’s tallest freestanding tower before being superseded by the Burj Khalifa in 2010.

The Canada Lands Company, a federal Crown corporation that owns and operates the CN Tower, recently announced a $21 million (£12.4 million) investment to modernize the tower’s outdoor terrace level, maximize indoor viewing capacity and improve accessibility.

The newly renovated space will also feature state-of-the-art interactive video walls and a new and uninterrupted glass floor.

Jennifer Paige, a spokesperson for the CN Tower, told online media company Narcity, ” There have been great advancements in structural glass since our original glass floor was installed. We can now use larger, seamless panels for a more dramatic effect”.

News of the renovation has been well received amongst employees at the tower.

Matilde Savard-Corbeil, wine expert at the famous 360 Restaurant within the tower, welcomes the changes and looks forward to being able to deliver a premium service in the new surroundings.

She said, “The cost of visiting the CN Towers is quite expensive for people. It’s a landmark for Toronto and to offer such a restaurant up there, it has to be worth the cost. A fresh and innovative experience is quite essential to position the CN Tower next to other world landmarks like the Eiffel Tower”.

Despite the positive publicity, some people feel the tower is already up to an impressive standard, and believe the money would be better invested elsewhere.

Jennifer Roy is a tourist from Montreal. She said, “I don’t think it’s necessary. I had a pretty good experience already. Of course upgrades are always nice to keep up with the times, but $21 million seems like a little overkill”.

The tower is scheduled to finish renovations next summer.
