Usually putting on music shows and club nights, The Key Club opened its doors for its first ‘alternative freshers fair’ since 2019. The fair showcased local independent businesses, non-profit organisations and artists.

Organised by marketing assistant, Sav Bowskill, the event has proved to be a success with students and locals filling the venue from its opening at 11am on Monday 26th of September. From vinyl stores to tattoo artists promoting their work, there was really something for everyone.

Leeds Conservatoire student, Kieran Flanagan (they/them), said ‘it makes me feel included’ and felt that there was finally a freshers event that they were interested in going to as a member of the alternative subculture.

The Key Club opened up their backroom for people to use their arcade machines or just to sit and have a chat with others at their leisure. Hosting a stall themselves, they gave out limited edition tote bags, badges and free tickets to their weekly club nights. From the Indie Disco on a Thursday to The Garage: Rock Anthems and Guilty Pleasures, freshers have the opportunity to come and try out what the venue has to offer.

Mad Millennials are a non-profit mental health organisation, who provide support for those who have grown up in the age of social media. While focusing primarily on the millennial generation, they also offer their services to students and other young people struggling with mental health issues. ‘We’re trying to be real about mental health and support people on that level. But also opening up the conversation and delving a little deeper’

A truly successful day for The Key Club bringing people together and showing their venue to be an inclusive safe space and promoting small business, instead of being endorsed by large corporations.
