Turning high street sustainable

Global store Ralph Lauren has created the fashion industry discussion of sustainability after joining the US Cotton Trust Protocol on Tuesday 11 October.

This push to create a more sustainable strategy to their clothing production commits to them improving six key sustainability areas – soil carbon, water management, land use, greenhouse gas emissions and energy efficiency.

Leeds sustainable fashion label owner, Josefin Wanner said: “I was happy to hear the news of Ralph Lauren pushing further on sustainable strategies, these corporations are the ones who create the most harm.”

Katie Iolanilli, chief global impact and communications officer of Ralph Lauren said: “Cotton makes up more then three-quarters of our total material use and we are committed to ensuring this critical fibre is fully sustainably sourced in our portfolio by 2025.”

The move was in support of their pre existing Timeless by design global citizenship and sustainability strategy attempting to have a positive impact on the planet.

An estimated 92 million tonnes of textiles waste is produced yearly.

4,000 tonnes of clothing ends up in Leeds household bins every year claims organisation zero waste Leeds. This is roughly 12 kilograms per household.

University of Leeds is the first university to sign up voluntary agreement to fight the impact of the UK clothing and house fabrics industries and their affect on the environment.

Tradcollective is a sustainable concept store who is apart of the Leeds sustainable community which main focus is on up-cycling clothing as well as alterations and mendings to tackle fabric wastage.

Wanner said: “We are already seeing how big of an impact the big corporations are having on the planet so if they don’t make any changes this will just grow and grow.”
