Increase in cost of living could result in closure of leisure centres

Leisure centres could close due to the rise in energy bills and cost of living

Leisure centres across the UK may have to close following the cost-of-living prices and a poor recovery from Covid 19.

The pandemic has meant leisure centres have had to close for up to 2 years so have not been able to make a sustainable profit even by increasing memberships and lesson fees.

Kate Hutchinson who works at Leeds City Council said: “The council projected an overspend of £20 million which we need to find in savings to balance the budget this year.”

Currently there are no plans to close leisure centres this year as they are plugging the shortfall in that department by increasing membership fees and swimming lessons. Savings on staff and purchasing has been made to tackle the low budget.

Kate said: “We have closed a lot of council offices, so that’s the big energy saving. We bulk bought 85% of our energy this year before the price increase.”

“Despite swimming pools being the costliest, they are ok for now as are leisure centres, but difficult decisions will need to be made down the line.”

Public facilities are safe from closing now but the 15% of energy they didn’t buy could nearly match the price of the 85% they did.

Go Gateshead request public speak

Due to the dramatic cost of living Gateshead council are now asking the public for their say on the future of their leisure centre.

“We are facing a crippling financial challenge and poor covid 19 recovery has meant the services have been overspent by £2million. 12 years of austerity have led to budget cuts totalling £179m.”

“The consultation is an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to have their say on how a reduction in service might impact on them, and to suggest ways to improve services.”

Although there are no immediate plans to close leisure centres, if the cost of living prices does not change then this is something which could see them close.
