Surge in disruption over the bonfire weekend in Leeds

Residents in Leeds have been left feeling frustrated following recent anti-social behaviour across the city.

Following Bonfire Night on Saturday 6th November, concerning footage emerged on social media. The videos appeared to show groups causing chaos in Hyde Park, firing rockets and fireworks at police officers.

Riot police appeared at the scene in a bid to control the disorder.

The nuisance continued late into the night, with a number of recycling bins being tipped over, leaving the streets in areas of Hyde Park and Headingley covered with rubbish.

Leeds resident, Ellie Saddler lives near the disruption. She shared her disappointment at the recent events: “I know we’re all young people but things like this shouldn’t be happening. The disruption is waking people in the early hours.

“I love living in Leeds, but I don’t want to hear people kicking over bins and causing havoc, especially considering the fact that families live here too. It must be even worse for them.”

Headingley resident, Georgia Emmerson said that people shouldn’t assume that students are responsible for the disruption. She said: “I feel very safe living in Headingley. Many students live in the area, and I think we all want to look out for each other.

“Obviously recent events are out of order, but it would be unfair for the general public to generalise that just being students in the area, when in reality there’s a mix of people living in the area.”
