Manchester and Sheffield are among the cities having lower emissions than Leeds. Greenhouse gas emissions from the domestic sector, transport and large industrial installations have strengthened the greenhouse effect, contributing to climate change.
Dr Karen Horwood, a senior lecturer in planning and human geography at Leeds Beckett University, said: “One of the big problems with Leeds is that it doesn’t have a mass transit system. For example, it doesn’t have a tram network or underground system. It obviously has a bus network, but that’s not the same as having some of those mentioned systems. That’s something Leeds has been trying to fix for decades.”
She also believed that the problem would be “difficult and take a long time to deal with” since it requires the coordination of both the local authority and residents with long-term and practical solutions.
