Leeds students are abandoning a once popular area of the city of Leeds due to the ever growing crime rate.

Crime rates in Hyde Park are on the up, statistics in relation to violent crimes and public order offences are up there with one of the worst in the country.

But the region also sees some of the highest figures in theft and burglary across the city.

Six months ago a 50 year old man broke into a students home, climbed into her bed and sexually assaulted her, this left the victim ‘understandably traumatized’.

Burglaries in the area have always been a major problem, Tim Duffy a Journalism lecturer at Leeds Beckett experienced multiple break ins at his home in Hyde Park over 30 years ago.

He lived on Chestnut Avenue which, at that time was allegedly the “most burgled street in the country”. He first got burgled as they entered his house via a first floor window, “they took just about everything I had”.

The second time however, had a greater consequence when they opened up his window and stole his car keys. “Somethings never change” he said about the ongoing crime in the Hyde Park region.

The overall crime rate is 182 crimes per 1000 people, the issues lie in the spiraling figures across violent crimes (1907 incidents) and public order offences (627 incidents) which are leading to a whole new roster of crime according to Churchill Support.

Anti social behavior is a common theme among Leeds anyway but the statistics for the size of the Hyde Park area are worrying.

Two months ago roads across the region were all shut off due to multiple incidents of anti social behavior, fireworks being thrown at a restaurant and bricks being aimed at police cars.

“A dispersal order is being put out in place in the Hyde Park area of Leeds after multiple reports of Anti Social Behavior”.
