Homelessness in Leeds is a problem all year round but especially at Christmas with the drop in temperature and the lack of support they have from friends and family.

While some of us are busy enjoying the Christmas markets and a warm hot chocolate others are struggling to even find shelter.

Helping hands dish out free food like pizzas and sandwiches as well hot drinks and clothes.

This is referred to as the feed by the helping hands volunteers and this happens every Wednesday and Sunday at 7pm in the city center outside Zara.

Helping hands are a non profit charity and CEO Toni Fivestar says it only costs 18p to feed a homeless person although some charities claim it’s a lot more.

She also said:

“We make our own healing crystal keying, with the hope that one day they’ll have a key to a home on there.”

Dianne Goodall, a volunteer for helping hands says: “We’re their family that’s how I see it.”

She started helping out 12 months ago and is still making it out once or sometimes twice a week on Wednesday and Sunday evenings.

Toni comes from a homeless background herself where she struggled with drug abuse and endured some very harsh situations whilst she was sleeping rough.

She first started to help those in need when she took in a few working women from the street to help keep them safe, shelter and food.

Since then, she has been a prominent and consistent support for the homeless community and they rely on her for their supplies and for emotional support.

Toni referred to the community as her “homies” and she spoke fondly of the relationships she has built with everyone.

The charity accepts public donations but also works in partnership with The Bearded Sailor, M and S and Pizza Pizza give helping hands hot food donations to give out on the feeds.
