Bonfire cancellations across Leeds

Leeds City Council has unfortunately cancelled six bonfires due to take place across the city in the coming weeks.

The council say have confirmed that this is due to a concern for wildlife as well as domesticated animals.

Other sources are saying that this is due to the soaring energy prices.

Bonfires are always considered expensive for the council also, with the involvement of the safety precautions and the cleanup included afterwards.

Residents of the city are upset and disappointed, with many families planning on going to the event to celebrate this year.

The ‘significant budget pressures’ have hugely impacted the ability for the council to have these bonfires, if they had gone ahead, they would have cost around £200,000.

A spokesperson for the council has said “We certainly did not take this decision lightly, and we know that this news will come as a real disappointment to many people, and this disappointment is something that we share.

There are now concerns for residents in the area who may take matters into their own hands, such as creating their own bonfires and setting off their own fireworks in an unsafe manner.

The bonfire cancellations include both the firework displays as well as the original bonfire itself.

The council have said that this action is to be taken indefinitely and will prevent further bonfires from happening.

The events cancelled were meant to be held in Roundhay Park, Bramley Park, East End Park, Middleton Park, Springhead Park and Woodhouse Moor.
