With over 30 football clubs in Greater Manchester, ranging from the Premier League all the way down to the North West Counties League, we wanted to find out what the best borough is to be a football fan in.

Two out of the ten boroughs stuck out for obvious reasons, one being the Borough of Manchester which includes Manchester City, who made up a rather large portion from this borough’s success with 33 major trophies.

Win Percentage for each team

All of the teams displaying win percentages over 47% are within the top 50% of clubs in Greater Manchester and with no surprise Manchester City have the highest win percentage. North-West Counties Premier Division side Wythenshawe Amateur’s being in second place with 71% was unexpected.

We then looked at which boroughs had the highest win percentages and found that Manchester was ahead with 57.57%, 10.57% more then the next best borough Stockport. Wigan had the lowest win percentage out of all the boroughs with just 30.4%.

Average win percentage per borough

Bolton fan Ellis Crook on Twitter said “I think Bolton are not far off being up there as one of the best from the lower leagues. We were 10 minutes away from liquidation and now we’re smashing it in League 1 along with winning the Papa John’s trophy last year.”

“It’s a massive town that pull nearly 20 thousand a week attendance which is great considering the clubs around us. It goes to show how strong Manchester is compared to London or Yorkshire, I also enjoy seeing the teams around us do well as we have (Wigan , Bury , Oldham) all been so close to not being a club.”

Oldham Fan Rhys Parson argued “I do believe Oldham is the best borough in Greater Manchester to be a football fan at the moment , after a 30 year decline we are finally on the up , with a fantastic local owner , who has transformed the club on and off the pitch, finally bringing in top quality players and a great manager gives us the opportunity to see the first bit of success the club has had in a long time.”

Oldham are in the National League after a hard few years being relegated. They are the biggest club in their borough with Chadderton and Avro being the only other two. After many years could this be the year that Oldham can get back to their best?

Stockport County Football club are back in League Two, a team so close to back to back promotions but fell short, as they lost to Carlisle on penalties last May. They currently sit top of the league hoping to and are slowly building their way up to the English football pyramid, seeking their 3rd promotion in six years.

Stockport Fan and Youtuber Sid Freeman reiterated, “it has to be Stockport , the vibrant match day atmosphere and the community within the club is what separates us from the likes of Man City and Man United.”

The club is also on the up compared to other teams in the EFL or National League, they are flying high and are currently on a 12 game unbeaten streak. “Off the pitch we have just created a new fan zone , which shows we are a club that prioritizes its fans, thanks to our great owner Mark Stott.”

Football in Greater Manchester is on the up, signs are more promising now then they ever have been and there’s a positive mood surrounding football in the area. Manchester is the most successful borough based on win percentage in the last 3 years but that doesn’t mean there aren’t huge upsides to being a football fan in the rest of Greater Manchester.
