Over the duration of three weeks, we created stories incorporating data journalism. In week one we conducted data gathering, collectively working as a team, using a live Excel spreadsheet.

We then checked the work of our fellow team members, ensuring all the figures were accurate. I found this particularly challenging as it required lots of focus to ensure no mistakes were made.

Once the data was gathered we were divided into groups to focus on a particular area of data. The area we were allocated was COVID vaccinations.

Using the vaccination data on Excel, I created a map on Flourish to highlight the decline in the number of people having their second dose of the jab across the country.

For my piece I decided to focus on the decline in people having the second dose of the vaccination, exploring possible reasons for this and people’s opinions on the matter.

Prior to the newsday, I went to different areas across Leeds to gather content for my piece. I was able to get a number of relevant photos for my article, cutaway shots for my video package, as well as an interview with a resident in Garforth. I also had my booster jab on the day and was able to gather information regarding possible side effects of the vaccination from my administrator.

Once home, I interviewed a student nurse, who gave an insight into the vaccinations. I incorporated the interview into my video package and was also able to use some quotes for my article too.

I found the data news days a challenge but overall, rewarding. In order to improve, I feel I should practise using Excel to ensure I feel more confident using it in the future. I also feel that my video package could have been improved if I’d had one more interviewee. I also created a TikTok to try and engage the audience further, and encourage people to have their vaccinations.
