600 word article- ‘The problem with British basketball’

One problem I found when writing this story was including too much of my opinion, or paragraphs that cam across as opinion. This was highlighted to me after receiving feedback after my first draft of the story. It had happened due to me placing some of the information before the quotes from my primary source that bought the information up, creating the perception that a particular paragraph was my opinion, not that of my source’s.

I solved this by re-arranging parts of the article so that the quotes from my primary source came first, there was also a section I originally had at the end of my story that was comprised all of opinion, so I replaced this by asking a player a question based on the content I had. The quotes from this later formed the last two paragraphs.

The new skill I acquired from completing this piece, is how to include less opinion into an article. I also learnt how to use an interview to form a story as although I knew the rough outline on what I wanted to include it wasn’t until after the interview that the story really started to form.

The biggest problem I came across when creating this content was finding a story appropriate for the Instagram slideshow template. My original plan for this piece was to be about politics place in sport, however after discussion during a 1-1 I realised that it wouldn’t work considering the assignment is largely picture based.

I overcame this issue by waiting for a story, or something noteworthy to happen that I could use. This happened by the time I returned home for Christmas when my local football teams old ground had planning permission confirmed. I knew this would make a perfect story for Instagram as the comparison between the old worn down ground with overgrown grass, and the new ground is visually, very interesting.

The main skill I acquired from this assignment is the ability to find a story. This was a challenge as it is difficult to find something that is either new or ongoing that also works visually for an Instagram slideshow. Often it was somewhat frustrating as I was unsure on what to make a story about. But now I have learnt the skill to know what to look out for, it is incredible useful as it can be transferred across all my modules and assignments.
