Robots set to deliver food to shoppers in Leeds

Leeds residents are now able to have their groceries delivered entirely by robots.

Two Co-op stores in Leeds- Otley Road and Spen Lane- have introduced robots that can deliver groceries, with no humans needed.

Following the launch, 20,000 Leeds residents within the radius of Adel and nearby Tinshill will be able to order on the Starship food delivery app.

The Co-op and Leeds City Council have partnered with Starship Technologies- marking the first-ever launch of the bots in the North.

Hannah Riding, an Adel Co-op team member said: “For people who can’t necessarily get out it’s easier for them to just walk to the end of their drive. It’s also fun for families because it’s quite cool to have a robot turn up at your door. It’s something for everybody.

The orders can be with customers within an hour and can be unlocked upon arrival, using the Starship app.

The introduction of the robots in Leeds follows previous success in Milton Keynes,Bedford, Northampton, Cambourne, and most recently Cambridge.

However, Nathan Stewart, a telecom engineer in Leeds shared his thoughts on the possible limitations of the new robots.

He said: “I think they’ll get destroyed in a matter of minutes. In the whole of Leeds, I think there will only be about 4 or 5 estates where these robots survive. If a delivery driver feels they are losing work to a robot and can’t pay their rent, what will they think?”

The trial in north-west Leeds will last for three months.
