The new university basketball season has started and so has André McCalla’s third season as captain.

André said, “We need to focus on what system we can build…we have a new coach, a new program, a fresh start… everyone is taking it seriously.”

Beckett have made a perfect 2-0 start to the season with wins in the cup over Leeds Trinity and in the league versus the LBU 2nd team.

André has proved to be a Swiss army knife so far this season, picking apart opposing defences in various ways. McCalla racked up 16 points in the season opener and showcased elite leadership.

Following a poor season which lead to relegation, Beckett couldn’t have wished for a better start. André said, “It’s all about mindset…we all have a shared goal.”

To say its been a topsy-turvy tenure as captain would be an understatement. LBU looked completely outclassed far too many times last season.

For André it was a staggered season plagued by “managing injury and managing rehab” and his untimely absence greatly hindered LBU’s ability to win games and play as a cohesive unit.

André said, “I’m at 90%…I feel good but it’s disheartening seeing a teammate injured… it completely drains energy and motivation.”

The final nail in the coffin for LBU last season was the 66-63 varsity loss against rivals University of Leeds. Poor shot creation and sloppy turnovers was the story of last season.

One thing that can’t be disputed is André’s love for the game and he’s hoping that energy is embraced by the returning squad and new recruits alike. André said, “that hardworking mentality, that dog mentality…it’ll be passed onto the freshers.”

Next up LBU take on Edge Hill away from home and will look to continue their hot start to the season.
