The government said food prices have increased to the highest level in 13 years.

The UK government has just released a report on the rising cost of living in the UK. Due to cuts in the Russian supply of fuel, household earnings have been falling short of meeting living costs.

Global supply chain disruptions and the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine led to an increase in input costs of food producers. UK food prices went up by 28% between 2021 and 2023. Gas prices have also reached record highs.

Emily Ramskill, who is living in Headingley, Leeds, talked about her struggles to manage bills. “With the start of the rising costs, we had to cut down on heating. We really watch where we do use these sources, especially not leaving lights on and not leaving the taps on. You have got to keep in mind. It is just going to get even more on your mind, and people are going to be even more stressed,” she said.

Leeds City Council is now discussing additional plans to provide support to people. They are in the process of deciding what the priority will be to help the residents. Councillor Barry Anderson, the chairman of the Scrutiny Board (Environment, Housing and Communities) said: “In the short term is the increasing pensions, increasing money for people who are poor and are struggling. We will give money to local authorities to decide how to prioritise it.

“One of the things they have got to decide is do they prioritise it for energy purposes or whether for food purposes,” he added.

People are worrying about the rising bills in their households and do not know if they can keep up with the costs or not.
